1. Make the first 10 minutes of the game easy. No searching for a character or item or anything.
2. Always bring the character to a peaceful camp/village after around 15 minutes of initial gameplay.
3. Keep lots of NPCs in all camps/villages.
4. Game minutes to ascend to level n should be between (n-1)*10 to n*10.
5. The more character skills the better.
6. Around 5 character classes and 10 to 15 subclasses. That is 2 to 3 sublass per class.
7. [Important] Quest marker should always be visible on the mini map and map. In other words, player should almost always know where to go next in order to progress quest.
8. Main quest and side quest markers on map should preferably be different.
9. Ability to make a particular quest active thus reflecting in the minimap.
10. There is no such thing called too many side quests in an RPG. Side quests are the blood of an RPG.
11. Choice defines an RPG. This should be available for the story, side quests, character appearance, alignment ( good or bad etc.)
12. A hot chick whom you can almost bang.
13. Good control during combat. Oblivion is the best example. The likes of Dragon Age and Neverwinter Nights 2 are examples of bad combat control because you basically just click and order the character and the rest is decided by die rolls.
14. [Important] Boss fights are a must. Always helps to have mini-boss, sub-boss etc. Diablo 2 is a good example.
15. Achievements, Titles, Faction allies, Guilds etc. always help.
