Dell Streak Accelerometer not responsive/stuck

I recently bought the Dell Streak 5 and merely 5 hours after buying it I realized that there was something wrong with the accelerometer/gyroscope.
First, the screen never changed orientation from portait to landscape. Second, when I tried playing a racing game the car kept going right no matter how I turned and tilted my phone.
So I tried entering fastboot to alter the calibration. But that did not fix the problem either. I tried shaking the phone vigorously which did result in some improvement for a while but then went back to the original buggy state. So I figured it was a hardware problem and so returned it to the service centre the next day. The dumb technician flashed my phone, re-installed the OS (2.2) and without verifying ANYTHING gave the phone back to me and said it was fixed. I don't know if he was dumb or he thought I was dumb but I pointed to the obvious fact that it still was not fixed. I was asked to keep the phone with them and collect a new and replaced handset the next day.
The next day, there was indeed a new handset waiting for me at the service center :D. Have been using the new handset for a week now. No problems. Dell servicing is quick and somewhat efficient. They are definitely better than the service provided by anyone else in India. However, if one sticks to an absolute scale of measurement for their service quality they still have a long way to go.
