While I was listening to a podcast on green energy I heard that for cyclical sources, like the sun, tidal energy etc. the main issue is storage. Because, for example, solar energy can be utilized at night only if stored successfully during the day.
Well I got an idea, a really simple one at that. Electricity can be stored in the form of mechanical energy, like a spring, and can be used to drive a mechanism for generating electricity at night! It seems so simple so I am guessing someone has already found this infeasible. Although I cannot see how. A very simple example is to use solar energy to press a huge spring. Then at night, just connect that spring to a turbine or a dynamo and release the spring for generating power!

Energy Storage...too simple?

you missed the simplest flaw in the your simplest idea. Its inefficient. It will waste more energy in both forward and backward conversion than usable stored energy.
First of all to wind a spring I assume you would again be converting into electricity and then wind the spring with a dynamo.. there goes efficiency (conversion is at 7% with the latest tech).. And mechanical is always prone to losses and wastage..
